BLS Instructor Heartsaver

American Heart Association CPR/BLS Instructor Heartsaver (Los Angeles)

BLS Instructor Heartsaver Course is designed to prepare instructor candidates to teach AHA Instructor-led and blended learning courses. The course educates instructor candidates on how to adequately use American Heart Association Instructor teaching materials, ensure that students meet learning objectives, offer student coaching skills, provide an objective skills performance evaluation, and follow AHA Instructor and course policies. The course covers core content and discipline-specific content required to teach AHA courses.
Candidates who successfully complete the BLS Instructor Course, followed by course monitoring, will receive a BLS Instructor card, valid for two years. BLS Instructors are then able to teach the BLS Provider course and any course within the Heartsaver portfolio.

Available Learning Formats & Prerequisites

This course is offered in the following format:

Blended Learning (Online + Classroom):

The BLS Instructor Course is taught in a blended learning format. AHA BLS Instructor candidates must complete the online portion (BLS Instructor Essentials), followed by the hands-on session conducted by CPR Essentials’ AHA Certified Faculty. 

Course Prerequisites:

  1. Candidates must be at least 16 years of age
  2. Candidates must have a current American Heart Association BLS Provider course completion card
  3. Align with CPR Essentials on the AHA Instructor Network
  4. After your training, you must co-teach a BLS/CPR & First-aid course at one of our locations.
  5. Complete the BLS Instructor Essentials Online Course
  6. Purchase BLS Instructor Manual

Classroom

Explore the science behind it

  • Apply the BLS, Primary, and Secondary Assessments sequence for a systematic evaluation of adult patients
  • Perform prompt, high-quality BLS, including prioritizing early chest compressions and integrating early automated external defibrillator (AED) use
  • Recognize and perform early management of respiratory arrest
  • Discuss early recognition and management of ACS and stroke, including appropriate disposition
  • Recognize and perform early management of brady arrhythmias and tachyarrhythmias that may result in cardiac arrest or complicate resuscitation outcome
  • Recognize and perform early management of cardiac arrest until termination of resuscitation or transfer of care, including immediate post–cardiac arrest care
  • Model effective communication as a member or leader of a high-performance team
  • Evaluate resuscitative efforts during a cardiac arrest through continuous assessment of CPR quality, monitoring the patient’s physiologic response, and delivering real-time feedback to the team
  • Recognize the impact of team dynamics on overall team performance
  • Discuss how the use of a rapid response team or medical emergency team may improve patient outcomes
  • Define systems of care
